Dear friend,

There are just a lot of things that all of us share.  One of them is "questions."  I was there on 9/11 and I'll tell you how that affected me and how I pray, but more on that later.

Now get this.  I was on my way into NYC at 9:15 AM 9/11.  I was on hwy 9E coming from Jersey.

I came over a rise on the highway and could see what was my favorite view of the city, the twin towers.  It wasn’t very cold so I was surprised that there seemed to be steam coming from the towers. 

The closer I got I realized, it wasn't steam.  Then I saw a hole in the side of the north tower.  Hmm. 

I thought some private plane made a huge mistake and got off course and flew into the tower.  The closer I got the more smoke there was, the more traffic slowed down…finally to a stop

What would you do?  Me too.  I turned the radio on and wondered what was going on… just in case. 

Then while under the overpass and just before the Holland Tunnel, the radio announcer said the second tower had been hit, "we are under attack."  There I was coming up to the Holland Tunnel parked in traffic with nowhere to go nothing I could do. 

I could see what I thought were pieces of the towers falling off.  Later to find out it was people jumping… a thousand feet.

There was nowhere to go, nothing to do…but to pray.  FBI cars were inching their way past us between the two lanes.  People in cars in front, behind, and to my side were sitting there; we were all absolutely stunned.  Hang on there's more to come

First of all the reason that we are even talking and that you made your way to this page.

Like every other person on earth I wanted to know:

Ø    How this world really worked,

Ø    Why were there so many things I didn't understand?

Ø    What's it going to be like to be single,

Ø    How am I going to make ends meet? 

Ø    How will I make new friends,

Ø    Will I even be noticed or acknowledged?

I remember sitting in a pastor's truck talking.  We were having a good discussion.  The night was cool the sky clear and brisk.  I finally said, you know what?  I want to know the truth I don't want to live by clichés (rumors) [hearsay] anymore.

Boy, did that start some dominos falling.  God answered that prayer pretty fast and the first thing he said to me was: Well, Dave (I think God calls me Dave) then you are going to have to be the truth and tell the truth.  Yikes.  What did that mean?

Well I found out.

So let me go back to where we were all sitting under the edge of the overpass watching the twin towers start to crumble…

Here's what this is all about, as you and I both know, life can be kind of scary.  It can be great but there are times you will be

Ø  in situations that you didn't ask for

Ø  situations you didn't create

Ø  situations that are rough, tough, and no fun. 

What do you do?

What I did was pray.

Now wait, don't go away yet, this is too important

I had learned through difficult times that prayer is all you can do sometimes.  But it is the most important thing you can do, for you and every one you know and don't know.

There is a praise song called "God is in control."  We had just sung it the day before. 

Under the roadway, locked in traffic, in the darkness of the overpass, the sirens blasting, people's fear permeating the air all around me, smoke billowing darker and thicker.  I didn’t know if I was going to come out to world war III; the city melted into nuclear lava. God, what is happening?

I went back and forth between "is God in control?" to "God is in control." Back and forth, back and forth I had to make a decision under that overpass; alone, in the dark, surrounded by fear coming through the radio and from all the cars around me, with no guarantee of what I was going to see when getting to daylight.

I chose "God is in control."  I'm here to write about it and there's more to the story.  Maybe when we meet I can tell you the rest, but right now let's get back to why you're here.

I didn’t say this was about church; this is about you and prayer.  This is about increasing the power in your life so that the ridiculous news reports, meant to frighten you…don't.  Don't because you have a source of strength, a source of answers that make you stronger because you are connected to the source that created the whole universe.

You probably would want to do this (goodness knows you do other things on your computer) in private.

Ø    Have more faith in what will happen in your retirement

Ø    Feel confident about what the future holds

I'll tell you what would happen:

§     Life would be better 

§     You would feel stronger

§     You would feel safer

§     Life would start to make a lot of sense
